Monday was a day of phone calls, tracking down trades (like ghosts that float about, with imaginary cell numbers) and some visits & inspections...but still waiting on the structural engineer as all work will stem from his recommendations.
An Irving company (patron saint of NB) guy came to clean the furnace and hot water heater and check the integrity of the oil tank - surprise! we need a new furnace, hot water heater AND oil tank! The good news there is there was no charge for his visit.
The plumber also came by as there is no venting for the drains/toilet...more good news - he can fix all that, but we also need a pump to increase the water pressure and a number of lines & valves replaced.
Then another contractor dropped in after supper to look at the centre beam in the basement and it has been determined that the old posts were raised up a tad too much which accounts for the main floors slopping away from the centre line, the stairs taking on a slant and the doorways having a slight tilt to them (great home to walk around in if inebriated!) But good news! that too can be remedied with some cement footings in the basement, telescopic jacks and a turn here and there every few weeks.
Will the good news ever end?!
I went out to cut the grass to ease the stress as there isn't enough scotch in this province to bring on a "good news" haze! Jim set about digging out the garbage "dump" on the back of the property so the pile of debris for the future dumpster/dump truck is growing.
The weather is typical coastal - cool, some clouds and windy and that brings me to the last of the good news - it tends to hold the swarms of black flies at bay, as everyone seems to think it is a bumper crop this year.
But on a final note, our hopes are high to revive the cutiest little Cape Cod cottage in St Martins, which, even the trades have commented on as being a pretty property.
Deb & Tom - the crow bar and sledge hammer have been a great asset, but the advice on dealing with a garage leaning left ("push it right") didn't work!...and Nancy & Steve - wonderful bottle of scotch! and to everyone that sent us off with wine...it's next!
