...though we've had a few "hot" days, everything but the weeds seem to be waaaaay behind their scheduled appearances. No amount of daily inspections and encouragement can make them grow faster! That being said, all the transplants from Ontario have poked through the soil and are making an attempt. All but one of the new shrubs survived (one was removed by a snowplow) and trees are leafing out... perhaps next year the new house across the road will be less visible!
There is one healthy spring crop - blackflies/horse flies/mosquitoes!! In herds? droves? ... oh yeah! SWARMS! Being an Ontario (south) gal, it seems I have little or no immunity to black fly bites and they itch and swell to colossal proportions to the extent of needing oral anti-histamines as well as topical relief!
even Bijou has to battle the flies
new hat for the work that lies behind me!
Every sunny day is spent in the gardens - hoeing, weeding, planting and watering. The majority of the grass is left to Bill...and me? just the hand stuff around trees and shrubs.
one of the 6 CUSTOM planted boxes (the banker didn't even question the cost?!)
A donated park bench to watch sunsets from the orchard - thanks Steve!
the prettiest tree in the orchardAnd as if there weren't enough grass...John Mo came and removed 2 dump trucks of stumps left over from last year's tree cutting frenzy...then replaced by 2 dump truck loads of soil...a huge amount of seed and let the watering begin! This is all an excercise in eliminating Japanese knotwood (an invasive plant that looks like bamboo and grows a foot/day!) as well as removing the remnants of the old driveway.
My favourite machine - Jim keeps checking his watch! We had a night of training on the firetrucks - checking out equipment storage, filling pumpers and managing hoses etc.. Me? I spent the evening learning to drive a pumper with the chief...Jim took notes as the rest of the crew were moving and assembling equipment!
Jim checks in with central!Mom and Dad came for a brief visit and we gave them the same refrain
I always heard when visiting in past..."
you should have been here last week, the weather was beautiful!" But we did have 2 nicer days to tour the Fundy Trail, St Martins, the beach & caves...then came the fog and rain, and more of car touring v.s. on foot. They had a couple meals of lobster just in time for the end of the season and steak from our new barbie!
The traditional pic on the trail - "Monty" & Liz

Liz tries to blend with the local foliage at Cornhill nursery
we sure can grow hostas here!
Dad's favourite thing...lighthouses! but not fog horns!
"ooooh...I couldn't eat all this"...they did though!
just an artsy-fartsy pic of river stones
